Youth Withdrawal Services

These are services that support the process of physical detoxification from drugs of dependence. Most withdrawal experiences are uncomfortable and some can be life threatening, therefore professional help is highly recommended. Certain factors influence the process of withdrawal such as the type of drug, amount and frequency of its use and pre existing health conditions. However it can be done. Services to support withdrawal can be offered in a residential setting, at home or on an outpatient basis. For a preliminary confidential consultation call ADIS (9442 5000).

Youth Pharmacotherapies

These are drugs prescribed by a doctor to help treat a drug or alcohol dependency. Some are used for a short period of time to ease a withdrawal syndrome. Some are used to induce withdrawal. Some are used to support abstinence by reducing cravings, blocking the effects of further drug use or by making further use very uncomfortable. Some are used as a replacement for illegal drugs. Research is clear that these drugs are more effective when used in conjunction with counselling.

The range of available pharmacotherapies is broad (from nicotine patches to methadone) and finding the right one can be difficult. Access to opiate pharmacotherapies (methadone or buprenorphine) that provide pharmacotherapy treatment can only be made through ADIS. For a preliminary confidential consultation call ADIS (9442 5000).
