Drug Information I Ecstasy I Pill Purity

Ecstasy – Pill Purity report by ChemCentre

ChemCentre has provided much needed scientific support to Government departments, agencies and industries for more than 100 years.

Their analytical and investigative services go beyond the traditional laboratory to provide expert solutions to complex and routine problems in these key service areas: Forensics, Environmental, Emergency & Crisis, Food & Agriculture, Bioanalysis and Occupational Health.

The Illicit Drugs Section provides scientific support to police and other government agencies responsible for combating the use and manufacture of illicit drugs.

They are involved in a wide range of activities including:

  • Identification and analysis of illicit drug seizures and related substances
  • Investigation of clandestine drug laboratories
  • Collection and provision of drug intelligence information to police investigators
  • Comparison and profiling of drug seizures to help prosecute conspiracy cases and develop intelligence on drug movement and trafficking
  • Training police officers in clandestine laboratory investigation techniques
  • Participation in national drug strategy functions
  • Advising police and government agencies on issues related to materials for illicit drug manufacture
  • Giving evidence in court trials

ChemCentre reviewed the information available through their laboratory information system and reported the following results for a number of illicit drug types, commonly seen in tablet form that are seized by WA Police and submitted to the laboratory for analysis as ‘ecstasy’ tablets.

The number of seizures in the past five financial years is shown in the table and graph below. Of particular note is the rapid increase in benzylpiperazine (BZP) and trifluromethylphenylpiperazine (TFMPP) seizures in the past couple of years.

Graph 2 – MDMA purity of tablets

When considering just the MDMA samples, the average and range of purity for the five past financial years, it can be clearly seen that the average MDMA purity has dropped in each successive year. The wide range of purity also shows how variable the MDMA content can be.

Over the past two years ChemCentre also recorded ‘ecstasy’ tablets that were submitted for analysis that contained no MDMA upon analysis. These were found to contain either no illicit drugs at all, or one or more of the following substances;

  • 3, 4 -methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA)
  • paramethoxymethylamphetamine (PMA)
  • BZP
  • TFMPP
  • methylamphetamine
  • chlorophenylpiperazine
  • ephedrine/ pseudoephedrine
  • 4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine (2C-B)
  • paracetamol
  • codeine
  • caffeine
  • methandrostenolone (dianabol)

It was also noted that even tablets that appeared to be visually identical in colour, logo and shape, were found to contain different constituents, which serves to illustrate the point that you really do not know what you are buying!
